The Africa Alliance for Disaster Research Institutions (AADRI) was formally established in 2017, emerging from the Geography Department at Bindura University of Science Education in Zimbabwe. Its founding was marked by the department’s joining of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI), which served as the catalyst for creating this new continental network. Professor Desmond Manatsa was appointed as the interim Chairman and represented the nascent alliance at the World Bosai Forum in Sendai, Japan, that same year, where he presented its vision to the global disaster risk reduction community. The rationale for AADRI's creation was the recognized fragmentation and lack of collaboration within Africa's disaster research community. Despite the continent bearing a disproportionate share of global disaster victims, its research output was less than one percent of the world's total and there was no central hub to unify efforts. AADRI was therefore established to advance disaster risk reduction knowledge by fostering partnerships, sharing research, and providing a coherent message for policymakers across Africa, with its secretariat hosted at Bindura University’s School of Climate Change and Disaster Research.
The African Alliance for Disaster Research Institutes (AADRI) brings together Africa’s disaster research community to provide an accessible forum through which individuals and groups can engage with disaster research and scholarship. The goal is to bring empirically sound, disaster theory, measures and practices to bear on the real-world problems demanding disaster risk reduction, including the challenges of implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. AADRI is an independent network managed by voluntary contributions from the African research community and partners.
